Extended Realities and Other Adventures
Student Commons at the University of VirginiaPartner Proposal with Valerie Speirs B.S. Arch
For our final foundational studio course we were asked to design a new student commons at the University of Virginia in a team of students. This proposal was coordinated with Valerie Speirs. Located at the center of the University behind the Dell Pond and Old Dorms lies our site. We are proposing an exploratory space for students that focuses on connecting with peers and oneself through play and collaboration. The project achieves this through a duality of speculating on the potential of Virtual Reality technology as a socializing media and then a push back into the tangible world dedicated to recreation and movement. This takes shape in a series of what appear to be separate nodes dedicated to extended reality experiences above ground, however underground they are connected with a territory of different ways to move and relate with our colleagues. Our project’s framework of a multitude of adventures allows students to become focal points for both old and new ways to socialize and play, both physically and virtually.
